# Creating And Editing Presets

You can author presets directly on the pendant or through the Spikemark software on your computer.

If you want to save the current positions of axes to run that look over and over, creating presets on your pendant is a quick and easy way to get started. If you want to program a multi-step sequence with delays in between moves, or you're programming ahead of time without moving the motors live, you'll want to author presets in the full Spikemark software. For more information on how to create, edit or delete a Preset in Spikemark, check out [writing cues](/docs/spikemark-6/cues.md) and [creating presets from them](/docs/spikemark-6/presets/create-edit-delete-presets.md).

## Quick Save

Jogging motors to the same spot over and over? Save them as a preset! Once you've moved motors into position, use the **Save to Preset** option in the [Jog Workspace](/docs/showstopper/spikemark-vantis/4-jog-workspace.md) to create or update a preset.

![Save As Preset dropdown in the Jog Workspace](https://3040525219-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MhFI6SSKpm8M7EkrYqp%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-731ae9294f9bad72dbacfdad4f35e77e5e944e4a%2Fsave-as-preset-menu.png?alt=media)

When saving to a preset, all selected motors will be saved as movements in the preset. It's like taking a snapshot of the Axis Dashboard.

* Movement target position: the Stagehand's current position, as seen on the Stagehand card.
* Movement speed: the Stagehand's default speed. The default speed can been checked and changed in the [Motor Details](/docs/showstopper/spikemark-vantis/6-motor-and-group-details.md) page, accessed by double-tapping the Stagehand card.

You can move all your axes into position and then save them all at once using the **New** option, or move each one and save as you go using the **Add to Existing** option.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Disconnected motors may not display accurate positions if they've been moved since the last connection to Spikemark. They can be added to a preset, but editing the target position after requires them to be connected.
{% endhint %}

### Creating new presets

Save a new preset by selecting the **New** option in the **Save As Preset** menu.

When prompted, enter the name and select a color for the new preset. This new preset will have moves for all selected stagehands.

![New Preset pop-up](https://3040525219-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MhFI6SSKpm8M7EkrYqp%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-7438c2a7540ffdbbae14c00ec75428086d34f0a3%2Fnew-preset-popup.png?alt=media)

Click 'Save' to create your new preset. You should see a success notification pop-up at the bottom of your screen. If you want to check your new Preset, switch over to the [Preset Workspace](/docs/showstopper/spikemark-vantis/5-preset-workspace.md) and scroll to the bottom of the list (or search).

If you want to add additional notes or edit the title later on, you can do so in the [Preset Details](/docs/showstopper/spikemark-vantis/5-preset-workspace/preset-details.md) page.

{% hint style="info" %}
Saving to a preset will always save the atomic position shown on the motor's card. If you want to use a spiked position instead, edit the move in [Spikemark](/docs/spikemark-6/movements/motor-moves.md).
{% endhint %}

If you're using the pendant alongside the full Spikemark software, you'll notice a new cue has been generated in the Cue Workspace with the title of your preset. Presets are just a tidy way to save certain Playback sequences from a cue, so every preset needs a cue behind it.

![Generated cue in Spikemark](https://3040525219-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MhFI6SSKpm8M7EkrYqp%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-a03a1da1d66294e631a2c915e6382d12c282972e%2Fgenerated-preset-cue.png?alt=media)

### Updating existing presets

Once you've already got a preset created, and want to add more motor moves to it or update the target position and speed of moves already in it, select **Add to Existing** from the **Save to Preset** dropdown.

A list of all eligible presets will show up. Only single-step presets can be edited from the pendant, so multi-step presets created in Spikemark won't show here. Select the preset you want to add moves to.

![Edit Preset Pop-up](https://3040525219-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MhFI6SSKpm8M7EkrYqp%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-09dfd6549ee6c4ccf815cde155915ab3a7785b0e%2Fedit-preset-collapsed.png?alt=media)

By default, just the name will be shown for each preset. Click 'Show Details' if you want to see more information about each preset. Like the cards in the [Preset Workspace](https://github.com/creativeconners/PublicDocumentation/tree/main/showstopper/Spikemark-Vantis/5-Preset-Workspace/README.md#preset-workspace.md), you can toggle between the preview image of the preset and the list of moves in a Preset.

Stagehands that aren't a part of the preset yet will be **added** to it. Stagehands that are already in the preset will have their move **updated** to reflect their current position and default speed. You can see a summary of the moves being added or updated at the top of the pop-up.

![Edit Preset Pop-up with a preset selected and details expanded](https://3040525219-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MhFI6SSKpm8M7EkrYqp%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-1d06456769421102eb2b11ce19def99b7fa54588%2Fedit-preset-details-expanded.png?alt=media)

*`Backdrop` and two other motors were selected to add into the `Start of show` preset. Since `Backdrop` is already part of the preset, it will **update** its move, and **add** 2 new moves for the additional motors.*

Click 'Save' to update the preset. You should see a success notification pop-up at the bottom of your screen. If you want to check your new Preset moves, switch over to the Preset Workspace and search for the edited preset.

![Edit Preset success notification](https://3040525219-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-MhFI6SSKpm8M7EkrYqp%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-e8bad9e0e70401a9cd6ecbcab4f6d3fda8a30cea%2Fedit-preset-toast-notif.png?alt=media)

{% hint style="warning" %}
If a motor is disconnected, it can't be updated in the preset.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.creativeconners.com/docs/showstopper/spikemark-vantis/5-preset-workspace/saving-presets.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
